The second annual National Physique Committee (NPC) Mother Lode bodybuilding and fitness competition was held at the Grand Theater at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno on Saturday, April 13. The steampunk event included several acrobatic performances and featured a costumed Eric the Trainer as ringmaster.
Ted Johanson, director of strategic communications for Center Podium Productions, wrote that many competitions are themed, but for Mother Lode, “we seem to take it to a whole new level with the theatrics, celebrity performers and steampunk circus costumes all while showcasing the main stars of the show, the competitors.”
More than 200 bodybuilders from 12 different states competed, including a competitor who traveled all the way from Florida. The athletes were vying for a complimentary entry and hotel stay for the IFBB Pro League Russia Championship, where a top finish can can earn professional status.
Arm wrestling was added to the event this year. Over 80 athletes wrestled during the daytime qualifying rounds for a chance to compete at the Arnold Classic Armwrestling. During Saturday night’s event, 4 celebrity arm wrestlers competed at center stage.
