Two education informational events are scheduled locally this month for those currently in middle and high school.
High school students are invited to Reno/Sparks Goes to College from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the University of Nevada, Reno Joe Crowley Student Union’s Grand Ballroom. The Washoe County School District and the Western Association for College Admission Counseling are putting on the event.
Representatives from dozens of two- and four-year colleges nationwide will be available to discuss educational opportunities with students and their families. Information on scholarships, financial aid, campus housing and other topics will be made available. UNR students will also be on hand to lead campus tours. Admission is free but those planning to attend are asked to visit www.strivefair.com and preregister. Those without internet access can register onsite.
A separate event for middle and high school students, Passport to High School Success, is being put on by the Washoe County School District at two locations after Thanksgiving.
Families can learn and ask questions about the district’s signature academies, career and technical education, extracurriculars, gifted and talented programs, counseling, special education, advanced placement, dual credit options, early college opportunities, online classes and charter schools, among other topics.
“This is an important part of our mission to bring every child, by name and face, to graduation,” Kristen McNeill, district deputy superintendent, said in a statement. “Every student learns differently and has different abilities and interests. We work to provide them with opportunities to achieve their goals and begin their adult lives with skills that will serve them in the future. I encourage all of our families to attend one of these events and learn more about what is available for their students, even if they aren’t ready to attend high school just yet.”
Events are scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 26 at Truckee Meadows Community College, 7000 Dandini Blvd., in the Red Mountain Building; and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department, 98 Richards Way.
Admission is free. For more information, visit www.washoeschools.net/sacte and click on Passport to High School Success.
