The Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Northern Nevada is a non-profit social club with over 1500 active members. The club centers around those seeking to learn about the local community and meet new people. They offer a wide variety of activities to assist in adjusting to a new place of residence or time in life.

Newcomers and Neighbors has activities almost every day ranging from card games and Mahjong to hiking, gardening and happy hours. Members may participate in as many activities as they wish. All activities are formed and organized by club members.

The club has been around since the late 1980s and evolved from the “Welcome Wagon” organization even before that. Formerly known as the Newcomers Club, last year the organization changed their name to Newcomers and Neighbors Club of Northern Nevada.  The name change was prompted by a desire to include not only new residents to the area, but anyone seeking new friends and activities.

The Newcomers and Neighbors Club holds an Informational Coffee the first Tuesday of every month at the SureStay PLUS Hotel by Best Western located at 1981 Terminal Way, Reno. The group also hosts a fashion show, their biggest event of the year, each October.  This year’s event will be held on Oct. 18 at the Atlantis with a gourmet meal, raffles, and music. The fashion show is open to the public.

Editorial: Downtown desperation

The lipstick-on-a-pig comment gets uttered not infrequently when it comes to the rabid tenor adopted by local electeds and their boosters when they speak of downtown Reno.
