Gardnerville artist Sonia Carlson will host a free Chinese calligraphy workshop at 3:30 p.m. March 19 at the Nevada Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The event will run until 5 p.m. in room 3100.
The workshop is part of the Nevada Art Council’s Work of Artists series.
Growing up Zhangzhou, China, Carlson learned calligraphy in school and folk dances from her family. Through those experiences, she developed a lifelong interest in sharing Chinese culture through dance, music and the arts. Carlson’s presentation will intertwine cultural notes about China and Chinese tradition while encouraging participants to try calligraphy.
The Work of Artists is presented by the Nevada Arts Council, SENarts and Capital City Arts Initiative. SENarts is a partnership between the Nevada Senate, Nevada Arts Council, Nevada Division of Museum and History and the Brewery Arts Center. In a small and welcoming environment, artists offer insight into the work they do, the art they make and the talent it takes to produce their treasures.
The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is the agency charged with ensuring that state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the arts throughout Nevada. In addition to providing hundreds of grants to arts- and community-based organizations, schools, artists and local municipalities throughout the state, the NAC coordinates a variety of statewide programs and activities such as the annual Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high school-aged students, traveling exhibits, artist residencies, workshops and cultural assessments.
