Deputies cite 26 motorists for failing to yield to pedestrians during traffic safety campaign

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office cited 26 drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians during a pedestrian safety campaign focusing on high pedestrian use areas in Reno and Sun Valley.

On February 6 and February 9, 2015, the Sheriff’s Office joined the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department and Nevada Highway Patrol for the campaign focusing on Kietzke Lane south of Mill Street, and the area of Sun Valley Boulevard and Gepford Parkway in Sun Valley.

The following results are from the Sheriff’s Office portion of this campaign:

Sheriff’s Office staff assigned to the campaign initiated 110 traffic stops. Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, several other violations may be observed during the subsequent investigation making it possible that a driver may be issued citations for numerous violations.

The total violations cited and warnings issued was 148. In addition to 26 citations for failure to yield to pedestrians, 35 speeding citations were issued and 34 were for distracted driving/cell phone use.

  • 35 speeding violations
  • 34 cell phone use
  • 26 failure to yield to a pedestrian
  • 19 failure to show proof of insurance
  • 15 driver’s license related violations
  • 6 motor vehicle registration violations
  • 2 equipment violations
  • 1 Driving Under the Influence
  • 1 seatbelt violation
  • 2 other violations
  • 7 warnings
