Silver Springs food pantry serves 1,500 in one day

SILVER SPRINGS — Silver Stage Food Pantry director Kathy McIntosh reported that today, November 17th, the Pantry provided Thanksgiving food boxes that will help feed about 1,500 individuals in 404 families. Kathy said, “That is a record for us for one day. Our volunteers really rock and rolled!”

The Silver Stage Food Pantry, part of the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey, will be distributing Thanksgiving turkeys or whole chickens from Monday, November 17th through Friday, November 21 from 10am until 4pm.

Pantry Closed Nov. 24-Nov 28: The Silver Stage Pantry will be closed from November 24th through Nov 28th so the volunteers can spend the holiday with their families.

Location: The Silver Stage Food Pantry is located on the corner of Spruce Avenue and Ramsey Weeks at 3595 Ramsey Weeks Cut Off in Silver Springs,Nevada, near the public schools.

Pantry director Kathy McIntosh notes that the Pantry is “volunteer-powered”, saying, ” I want to thank our wonderful volunteers at the Silver Stage Food Pantry for putting in 1,630 hours of volunteer work in October. We could not do it without their hard work.”

The Pantry is a unique “one-stop shop” that offers job skills training for volunteers, an organic community garden where people can “grow their own”, weekly employment services with Community Chest AdultWorks staff, and periodic visits from area health agencies that offer flu shots and other services. A certified Community Health Advocate from Healthy Communities Coalition has an office at the Pantry, and offers on site workshops on tobacco cessation, diabetes management, and mental health “first aid”, etc.

The Pantry is also currently holding a warm coats, gloves, blankets, and socks drive.

Also, the Silver Stage Food Pantry will begin taking names of children for their Angel Tree the first week of December. They’ll be collecting new or gently used toys and gifts for children 0-17 years of age.
