“I know the plans I have for you… To give you a future and a hope”

Almost 40 years later, the service commitment offered by the Boys and Girls club continues to grow. The newest addition, the William N. Pennington Boys and Girls Facility, opens its doors May 20 at 11 a.m. The grand opening ceremony will be hosted by city officials, foundation partners and members from the board of directors. The new 55,000-square foot facility will serve up to 4,000 youth annually.

Mike Wurm of Boys and Girls Club of Truckee meadows believes in the club’s commitment to creating healthy children.

“We are ecstatic to celebrate the opening of this community facility that will provide opportunities and impact the lives of thousands of youth each year,” said Wurm.

The club runs 20 sites, including sites hosted in schools across the valley. In 2011, up to 11,000 youth were served by the program. That included 40,000 bus rides from schools to program sites, and over 200,000 meals to club members.

The club is supported by the generosity of local community members, local foundations, and corporations. Their contributions enable the club to invest $540 annually in club members, and limits club membership cost to $20 a year. These contributions fund 130 different programs.

The Pennington facility includes distinct areas for varying age groups. There are classrooms, computer labs, recreation rooms and art rooms all designed to meet the club’s needs. The club also features a commercial-grade kitchen, a cafeteria/multipurpose room and a four court gym. The property also includes a large outdoor play area.

The Community Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 from 5-9 p.m. Attendees are welcome to tour the facility and meet the staff.

Registration for the summer program is open and will begin June 16. Programs include tradition day camps and specialty camps such as Robotics Camp, Board-N-Blade Camp, Swim camp and many more. During the 2014-2015 school year, the club will service local Washoe County schools by providing transportation to the Club’s before and after school programs.
