The Creative Coalition of Midtown (CCM) will be hosting a local Black Friday event in Midtown on Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. benefiting the WCSD Children in Transition Program.
The CCM is asking shoppers to bring a pair of new tennis shoes or boots (or $20) to the event, and in exchange they will receive a limited edition discount pass for participating Midtown businesses.
“CCM is very excited to be able to work with the Children in Transition program to provide to the children in our area,” said Angela Watson, CCM community coordinator. “With warm feet and hands, it helps these kids be better prepared for learning.”
The holiday shopping event will include live music, carolers, photos with Santa, arts fair and great discounts for Black Friday shopping.
“As the winter months approach, we see more and more need for appropriate shoes for our kids,” said Krissy Brown from Mt. Rose Elementary School. “ Many families are barely making enough income to pay basic bills, and a new pair of shoes or socks becomes an expense many cannot afford during the holidays. What a wonderful way to spread the joy of the season!”
The WCSD provides homeless children the opportunity to achieve the same education as other students. The Children in Transition (CIT) program works with the community to collect donations and eliminate the barriers these students face by providing the children with backpacks, school supplies, personal care items, shoes, clothing and food. The CIT program offers enrichment activities as well, such as field trips, sports and musical instruments to help normalize the academic life of homeless children in the community.
Shoppers can drop off donations as well as pick up a map of businesses participating in the Black Friday Event at the Creative Coalition booth in Sticks Plaza, 701 So. Virginia St. (by Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant).
In addition to collecting shoes for the WCSD Children in Transition, the CCM is working in conjunction with the River District and California Avenue to collect gloves and socks from Nov. 18 through Dec. 31.
