Dayton area schools participated in the national “Walk to School Day” on October 3, 2012.  Walk to School Day is a national event that promotes a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the “Walk to School” event in Dayton also kicked off a local Shoe Drive for the month of October. Healthy Communities Coalition has partnered with the schools to gather new, gently used shoes, or gift certificates. Both youth and adult sizes are needed. Lavurne Jeffreys, the shoe drive organizer from Healthy Communities Coalition, explained that people may drop off shoes at barrels located at any of the five Dayton area schools or at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street.  Shoes will be given to local residents during November and December.

Riverview Elementary’s first “Walk to School Day” on October 3 attracted about 75 students and 20 parents who walked one mile from Patriot Park to the school.  The staff also joined in the event and reported that they look forward to doing it again next year.

Roughly 85 students from Dayton Elementary walked to school on October 3 along with many staff and parents.  The walkers said they are looking forward to expanding the event.

This was the third annual “Walk to School” event for Sutro Elementary, and participating students won prizes. Their “walking school buses” method turned out to be a great way for parents and other community members to be involved in supervising children on the walk to school.
