SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE
A large portion of North Virginia Street is undergoing major construction for a comprehensive sewer plan that will allow for increased capacity to handle tributary waste flows from existing, proposed, and future developments in North Reno and associated areas.
During construction, lane restrictions and street closures will be required for safety. Message boards have been placed to inform drivers of closures and detours. Coordination with the Reno Fire Department and Reno Police Department has been done to ensure there is not a delay in emergency services. Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra travel time to accommodate for periods of heavy traffic congestion.
The entire construction project will run in phases until August 2012. The current phase will continue until March and includes 8th Street, I-80 off-ramp, and North Virginia Street between 8th Street and Artemesia Street. Businesses in the area will remain open during construction.
Fans heading to the Wolf Pack basketball games are encouraged to use McCarran Boulevard to get to the game and avoid the I-80 and the Virginia Street off-ramp and North Virginia Street from I-80 to 15th Street. After games, fans will be encouraged to detour to 15th Street then west to Sierra Street (south bound) or north to McCarran Boulevard.
The timing and scheduling of this project has been coordinated extensively with the I-80 Design Build Project, the new University of Nevada, Reno residence hall opening Fall 2012, UNR Special Events, the Highland Ditch (irrigation season start March 15, 2012), the RTC Pedestrian Improvement Project (North Virginia and Sierra Streets), and Reno Special Events.
