Boys & Girls Club to commemorate MLK day with community service, entertainment and art exhibit

bgctmstackedcolor600-300x189-1731738-5125872The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows hosts a program honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, Jan. 16, from 1 – 4 p.m. More than 50 children are expected to participate in the annual event, which begins with a silent march to Pat Baker Park, located at 1910 Bishop St. in Reno, in remembrance of the celebrated civil rights activist. The kids then begin a community clean-up at Montello and East 9th Streets, which is also a part of the Club’s participation in the Give Back Like Jack community service program.

After the members return to the Club, a performance of the “I Have a Dream” speech takes place featuring acclaimed theater actress Mrs. Evette Perry-Buchanan, Boys & Girls Club staff members, and Ambition Beauty Leadership Equality (A.B.L.E.) Women from the University of Nevada, Reno, a young women’s group dedicated to making a difference on campus and in the community.

Following the community service and entertainment portions of the event, an art exhibit is unveiled displaying works completed by members at the Club’s 18 sites and showcasing legendary African American historical figures and events.
