The Reno Police Department’s Downtown Enforcement Team (DET) is using multiple tactics to address panhandling in downtown Reno.
Over the course of the last year, officers have focused on crime analysis along with enforcement strategies to address panhandlers. In cooperation with the Reno Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit, the team has conducted operations using plain-clothed officers to address citizen complaints. This has proved to be a successful plan in enforcing laws related to soliciting. In 2011, DET Officers have made 56 arrests and 48 citations during their operations.
“The downtown businesses have been great to work with and continually help us by providing input and suggestions,” advises DET Sergeant Rick Ayala. “Visitors and residents should be able to enjoy their time shopping, eating, and spending time in downtown Reno and not be faced with aggressive or persistent panhandlers.”
The Reno Police Department’s Downtown Enforcement Team is dedicated to serving the citizens of Reno and to assist in creating a safe and enjoyable environment in the Downtown area.
