SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

In recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, Saint Mary’s is encouraging community members to complete their advance directives. Advance directives ensure healthcare providers receive the most comprehensive guidance regarding a patient’s wishes as to how healthcare services should be provided in the event a patient is unable to participate in his or her care.

Creating an advance directive allows a patient to make preferences about his or her medical care and helps alleviate confusion among family members or medical staff. Advance directives specify what actions should be taken in the event a patient is no longer able to make decisions due to illness or incapacity. The document also appoints an individual who can make critical decisions on a patient’s behalf. Proper completion of such forms make certain that each patient’s needs and wants are met while they are receiving care.

Saint Mary’s Hospice and Palliative Care are making it easy and convenient for community members to complete an advance directive. The following events will offer notary services, expert advice and forms—at no cost to participants. Additionally, all participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of four prizes.

Editorial: Downtown desperation

The lipstick-on-a-pig comment gets uttered not infrequently when it comes to the rabid tenor adopted by local electeds and their boosters when they speak of downtown Reno.
