SPARKS, Nev. — Rail City Garden Center joined the ranks of the horticulture industry’s top independent garden centers when it was named one of the Revolutionary 100 by Today’s Garden Center magazine.

To be considered for the Revolutionary 100, garden center owners and managers across the United States fill out an extensive online questionnaire covering topics such as employee training, industry involvement, profitability, marketing, use of technology, purchasing, and customer and community service.

The entrants are ranked according to a point system based on their leadership and innovation, not size or revenue.  The 100 top entries make the list.

“We’re honored to be included in this exclusive list of forward-thinking Garden Centers,” said Pawl Hollis, owner of Rail City Garden Center.  “We offer a lot of educational seminars and classes for our customers.  We call our classes Green College and in them we present correct, up-to-date-information on products. We also provide gardening tips and techniques from seasoned professionals.”

Rail City Garden Center classes are free, but participants are encouraged to bring can of food for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Hollis says the ongoing food drive provides an additional vehicle for giving back to a community that has ongoing needs.

“Service is a big part of our daily business and we take a lot of pride in having knowledgeable staff providing that service,” Hollis added. “We’re also pretty proud of our one-of-a-kind “Aquatics” division where we specialize in all water gardening and pond supplies.”

Hollis says Rail City Garden Center has embraced the “Square Foot Gardening” philosophy for those who want to grow their own fruits and vegetables.

“Square Foot Gardening allows our customers to produce more fruits and vegetables in limited amounts of space – without weeds,” he explained.

“The garden centers that made this year’s list are an exceptional group of forward-thinking, innovative retailers who are always striving to differentiate themselves from their competition,” says Today’s Garden Center Editor Jennifer Polanz. “We are proud to call them revolutionary.”

The 2011 Revolutionary 100 Awards program is sponsored by one of the premier industry suppliers for greenhouse structures, Nexus Greenhouse Corp.

More information on the Revolutionary 100, including the complete listing, can be found in the January issue of Today’s Garden Center magazine and at www.Revolutionary100.com.
