SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE
Renown Institute for Cancer has earned a three-year accreditation with The American College of Radiology Radiation Oncology (ACR-RO) for cancer radiation treatments. Renown Regional is the only hospital in northern Nevada and northern California to earn this national honor. Only 222 facilities in the United States have received ACR-RO Accreditation for Radiation Oncology.
“We are pleased to earn recognition as the region’s only accredited cancer radiation center,” said Susan Cox, RT, (T) (R) (M), manager for Radiation Oncology at Renown Institute for Cancer. “Given our continuous efforts to reach new levels of excellence and care for cancer patients, this latest development underscores our commitment to continuous improvement and the teamwork and collaboration required to exceed national standards.”
The ACR is a national organization that conducts peer reviews and awards accreditations to facilities deemed to have high quality and safety standards. To earn ACR-RO accreditation, applicants undergo an intensive evaluation process led by board-certified physicians and medical physicists.
In addition to being the region’s only nationally accredited radiation therapy center, Renown also offers the region’s only TomoTherapy program, which applies therapeutic radiation to treat tumors with 3-D imaging and improved precision. When TomoTherapy was installed in November of 2008, only two percent of hospitals nation-wide had the technology.
Other types of treatment include 3-D conformal; Image Guided Radiation Therapy; Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy; Stereotactic Radiosurgery; Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy; High Dose Rate Brachytherapy for breast, GYN and Prostate and Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy, commonly performed for prostate cancer.
