Today, Rory Reid released “Moving Nevada Forward,” his comprehensive plan to rebuild our economy, balance the budget and reinvent Nevada’s state government. The plan shows how Nevada can use numerous ideas from the SAGE Commission, and dozens of proven budget cutting measures adopted by other states, to balance its budget without raising taxes.
Reid knows that balancing the state’s budget is vital to the short-term future of Nevada. He has also released a pair of proposals aimed at leading Nevada in a bold new direction, “The Leading EDGE,” his plan to totally reform Nevada’s struggling education system, and “The Virtual Crossroads,” his plan for economic development and job creation.
These three important proposals frame Rory’s plans for the short- and long-term success of our state, including balancing the budget while creating jobs and improving our schools to rebuild our economy.
“Moving Nevada Forward” includes the following proposals among ideas to cut state spending:
— Slashing the number of state agencies and departments by nearly 40 percent. There are at least 26 state agencies. Reid would cut that number to only 16, saving $47.8 million.
— Downsizing at the top. Reid would reduce staffing of elected officials and cut administrative overhead by 50 percent, saving $73.8 million.
— Reinventing state government for the 21st Century. Reid would modernize state government, eliminating separate bureaucracies and unnecessary administrators, saving $680 million.
— Increasing efficiency with technology and green energy. Reid would create a cost-effective strategic information technology plan and cut down on energy consumption waste, saving $67.7 million.
The plan also includes the following proposals to boost revenues without raising taxes:
— Get a fair share of federal dollars that Jim Gibbons has not pursued. Reid would ensure the necessary paperwork is submitted for federal reimbursement of programs the state is already carrying out, netting $186 million.
— Crack down on tax deadbeats. Reid would make stronger efforts to collect the tax money Nevada is owed, bringing in $9.2 million.
— Investing in education to grow revenues. Reid would use universities as an economic driver and creating a skilled workforce that will draw new industry, creating new revenue of $615 million.
