BATTLE MOUNTAIN — This winter, northern Nevadans can heat their homes with free wood offered by the BLM Mount Lewis Field Office. The wood, consisting of pinion and juniper trees, is available to be trimmed and hauled at three locations on Roberts Mountain, northwest of Eureka.
“Most of the cut trees are along the road on the north slope of Gable Canyon, the east slope of Vinini Creek and Henderson Summit,” said Mike Stamm, the field office’s wildlife biologist. “The trees are not limbed, so I encourage bringing a chain saw.”
Stamm asks residents to exercise caution when harvesting the wood. “Exceedingly dry conditions and high temperatures make the area ideal for wildfires. I urge people to refrain from tossing lighted cigarettes, and be aware that vehicle exhaust systems and sparks from chain saws can potentially set vegetation on fire,” Stamm said. Travel is restricted to existing roads.
A permit is needed to gather the wood, and the field office will issue free permits for the Roberts Mountain locations only. Permits and maps are available at the District Office, 50 Bastian Road, Battle Mountain, and at the BLM Eureka Fire Station on Highway 50 one mile west of Eureka.
