Washoe County Library news release:
Reading programs are year-round happenings at Washoe County libraries! The traditional Summer Reading Program had become so popular, and year-round schools have become so prevalent, that the library has expanded these events. The Fall Reading Program will run from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 and will encourage children to read for pleasure and for achievement all year long.
The program will feature the theme “Mining for Silver in Nevada Books.” Participants will receive a “Nevada Bingo” card with squares full of activities and reading challenges. Each time a child scores a “bingo,” he or she will be entered into a drawing for great prizes. There will also be many lively, entertaining and educational programs for kids and families.
“Reading programs bolster skills and are free, convenient and fun,” said WCLS Youth Services Coordinator Brenda Baxter. “While kids think they are having a great time, educators know that informal reading increases children’s reading skills. Studies abound that show the direct relationship between reading and academic gains.”
Signups begin Sept. 1. Please call your local library or visit the Washoe County Library System Web site for details on the Fall Reading Program.
