Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue is offering free green waste collection events this fall to help Washoe County residents create defensible space around their properties. The collection days, from October through early November, allow residents to dispose of dry vegetation, shrubs, and tree branches that could fuel wildfires.
“Green waste collection allows residents to dispose of their dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other wildland fuels to encourage the creation of defensible space to protect homes and property from wildfires,” TMFR officials said.
The events will occur throughout Washoe County, including Washoe Valley, Verdi/Mogul, Lemmon Valley, Silver Lake, Palomino Valley, Spanish Springs, Red Rock and Galena.
Collection hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. Residents are advised to check the TMFR website (www.tmfpd.com) before attending to ensure events are not canceled due to weather conditions or a Red Flag Warning.
Junipers, pines, rabbitbrush, sagebrush and other woody vegetation are accepted. Household garbage, lumber, hazardous materials, grass clippings, dirt, gravel or stumps with root balls are not accepted. Commercial waste from contractors or landscape companies is also prohibited.
Residents are reminded not to dispose of waste outside designated hours, which would be considered illegal dumping.
