Northern Nevada Public Health is conducting helicopter mosquito treatment on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in Washoe County. The treatment will target wetlands and known mosquito habitats in the Reno-Sparks area to prevent the spread of diseases like West Nile Virus.
The virus can cause severe symptoms, including headache, high fever and, in extreme cases, paralysis or death. The treatment involves dispensing pellets that target mosquito larvae, preventing them from becoming disease-carrying adults.
While no WNV cases have been reported in Washoe County, county officials said measures are being taken to protect public health.
NNPH advises those recreating near wetlands to take precautions:
- Wear loose-fitting clothing (pants and long-sleeved shirts)
- Use insect repellant
- Be aware that mosquitos are most active during morning and evening hours.
