22288664666_c65686832d_n-8114584-8022034This was an interesting week with two first time events. First up was RenOpen Streets. Open Streets is part of the Cyclovia movement that started in early 2010. With high hope I ventured to the start of this 1.5 mile event.

Unfortunately the rain kept many away even though the weather turned out to be wonderful. For those who braved the threat of rain they were treated to a great start to what I am sure will be a very fun event in the future.

I did not take many photos, but here are the few I took (view slideshow at Flickr).

From there I ventured to the Great Basin Geek Con at the Reno Town Mall. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in the door. The energy and creativity was off the hook. This was a local event presented by Great Basin Geeks. With costume contests, vendor booths, and so much more there was fun for everyone. Here are the photos I took (view at Flickr.)

Events coming up that are worth a look

“Rapture, Blister, Burn” presented by The Reno Little Theater

After grad school, Catherine & Gwen chose polar opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in polar opposite ways, each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs– the prize being Gwen’s husband. With searing insight and trademark wit, this comedy is an unflinching look at gender politics in the wake of 20th-century feminist ideals.

Opening Friday October 23rd and running through November 8th

“The Passion of Dracula” presented by Laughing Owl Productions

“Funny, serious, scary, hilarious [and] … bloody enjoyable, cross my heart.” – WABC TV.

“Into the Woods, Jr.” Presented by Truckee Community Theater

Just a half hour from Reno you will find what promises to be a magical production.

“Into the Woods, Jr” is TCT’s first youth theater musical, starring local talented teen actors from Truckee, Tahoe, and Reno. This delightful musical is fun for all ages! It intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences, frequently comic, of the characters’ wishes and quests. The musical is tied together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife, their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey. Great entertainment for young and old alike!
