LAS VEGAS — United States Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz and Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval issued the following joint statement today after their meeting at the Western Governors’ Association’s Winter Meeting. As the current Chairman of the WGA, Sandoval invited Moniz to attend the event in Las Vegas.

Sandoval and Moniz had a productive meeting this morning, discussing the important role the western states play in the nation’s energy future, as well as the critical issues the state and the department share.

Secretary Moniz reiterated that few parts of America are more important to our energy future than the western United States. Western states excel in the production of renewable and nuclear energy and lead the country into a low-carbon future.

Both the State of Nevada and the Department of Energy have many interests in common and have worked continually to build cooperation.

The Department’s discussions with the State of Nevada and local officials regarding consolidated materials from the Oak Ridge site are ongoing.

Secretary Moniz also reaffirmed to Governor Sandoval that the position of the Department under this Administration has been unwavering – Yucca Mountain is not a workable solution. That has not, and will not change. The Department firmly believes in a consent-based process as a prerequisite for long-term success.
