Performers learn “the biz” in award-winning choreographer’s new book

cover-final-200x300-2618156-9702384Tony-award-winning choreographer and Reno native, Adam Cates, signs and present his new book, The Business of Show, Thursday, December 11, at 6:30 p.m., at Sundance Books and Music, 121 California Avenue, in Reno.

The Business of Show: A Guide to the Entertainment Business for the Performing Artist contains vital information for the career-driven performer venturing down the professional path.

More than 90 successful performers, directors, choreographers, producers, agents, and casting directors contribute facts about working in today’s entertainment industry.

Topics including marketing, networking, branding, auditions, education, rejection, contract negotiations, rehearsal protocol, unions, agents, taxes, and career longevity, are made accessible through humor, real stories and to-the-point advice.

With a fresh and honest focus, The Business of Show prepares our next generation of artists for a career in “the biz” full of passion and business sense.

Author Adam Cates is the associate choreographer for the Broadway Tony-winning hit A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. As a director, choreographer, and performer, his credits include productions for Broadway and Lincoln Center as well as national tours, television, opera, and regional theater. Cates has served as a guest choreographer, master teacher, and lecturer for the Juilliard School, Texas State University, Ithaca College, the University of Nevada, Reno, Montclair State University, the Broadway Artists Alliance, Dance Masters of America, and Broadway Dance Center and is on the faculty of Rosie O’Donnell’s Maravel Arts Center in New York.

This event is made possible through a partnership with Nevada Humanities and support from the Nightingale Family Foundation.

Miriam Hodgman is originally from San Francisco. She previously was the communications coordinator for the largest hunger-relief organization in Sonoma County, California. She has a bachelor’s degree in American history, with a minor in American Indian studies, from San Francisco State University, and has a master’s degree in public administration from Sonoma State University. She enjoys training a variety of martial arts.
