GERLACH — From July 26 through August 9, 2014, the Bureau of Land Management invites the public to the inaugural exhibit of artwork by the Black Rock Desert Artists in Residence.

The BLM Artist in Residence program promotes awareness through art of the exceptional places protected within the BLM’s National Landscape Conservation System. The program provides a small stipend and living facilities for artists to create works in National Conservation Areas, providing an opportunity for learning and dialogue about the value of preserving public lands. This year Nevada BLM hosted its first artists under the program.

The Artist in Residence exhibit will be held at the BLM Black Rock Station. The show will feature new works by artists Stephen Chandler and Judy Hilbish, who each completed a two-week residency in the Black Rock Desert this June. An opening reception will be held at the Black Rock Desert visitor center on Saturday, July 26, from 12 – 5 p.m. All are welcome to view the artwork and meet the artists, who will each give a short presentation describing their work and experiences while completing the residency.

Proceeds from sales of artwork will benefit future educational programming in the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails Conservation Area.
