Bank customer killed in robbery at Virginia Street bank

At about 10 a.m. today, a lone suspect entered the Bank of America at 5905 South Virginia St. brandishing a firearm and demanding money from bank tellers. During the course of this robbery, a male patron attempted to intervene and was fatally shot by the suspect. The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money from the bank and fled on foot, headed toward the area of Meadowood Mall.

The suspect was followed to this area by a witness of the robbery in the bank and who provided the suspect’s location at the bus stop to police. The suspect was detained and arrested without incident. Van McDuffie, 66, was charged with bank robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon causing death.

No other patrons or tellers were injured during this incident. The name of the victim patron is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Reno Police Department and the local office of the FBI are working in conjunction in investigating this incident.
