RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada head men’s basketball coach David Carter announced Thursday that AJ West and Lucas Stivrins have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Wolf Pack. Both big men will join the Pack for the 2013-14 season.
West will be a junior next season and played this past year at Monroe College in New Rochelle, N.Y. He helped the Mustangs post a 24-8 record. The team lost in the regional final 59-57.
The 6-9, 230-pound center averaged 10.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and a nations best 5.1 blocks per game. Three times he recorded 10 or more blocks in a game and 11 times had double figure rebounds. In 29 games played he posted eight double-doubles all in scoring and rebounding. His high point total was 28 and top rebounding game was 19. Against Harcum he had 20 points and 19 rebounds. He shot 45 percent from the field. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native played his prep basketball at Create Charter.
“We are extremely excited to have signed AJ,” Carter said. “His ability to rebound and block shots will improve our interior defense.”
Stivrins, a 6-11, 205-pound forward/center played just one year at Pratt (Kans.) Community College and will have three years of eligibility remaining. The Phoenix native averaged 5.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game for the Beavers that posted a 15-16 record. Five times he scored in double figures with a season-high 14 coming against Sterling College. His top rebounding effort was 10 against Coffeyville Community College. He played his prep basketball at Chaparral High School. His father Alex earned all-conference honors play at Colorado and went on to play in the NBA and professionally overseas.
A dual citizen Stivrins played this past summer for the Under-18 England National Team in the FIBA European Championships. He earned a starting spot and averaged 3.8 points and 4.1 rebounds and 12 minutes per game. He help the team earn a bronze medal.
“Lucas is a skilled post player who can score around the basket,” Carter said. “He is just a sophomore so his best games of basketball are in front of him
