WOLF PACK NEWS RELEASE
Bradey Shipley tossed eight strong innings, striking out eight to lead the University of Nevada baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Fresno State on Thursday.
The Wolf Pack (16-10, 4-3 MW) plated five runs in support of Shipley, who now sits at a record of 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA. The Nevada offense was in full swing against the Bulldogs (5-17, 1-4 MW), as eight Nevada players recorded hits on the day. Austin Byler was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Hugo Hernandez was 1-for-4 with a 2 RBI double.
Shipley started slow in the first inning, throwing over 25 pitches before he found a groove and struck out the side in the second inning. Nevada immediately responded in its half of the first when Jamison Rowe led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Byler RBI single.
The Wolf Pack exploded for three runs in the fifth, when another Rowe leadoff single resulted in a run, this time from a Brooks Klein RBI double. Two batters later, Hernandez hit a screaming shot off the wall to score Klein and Byler, who hit by a pitch. Ryan Teel added an insurance run with a leadoff home run to left center field in the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs were mounting a comeback in the ninth inning, but Michael Fain was able to retire the Bulldogs in a non-save situation to preserve the win.
The Wolf Pack is in action again on Friday when it hosts Fresno State at 6 p.m. in game two of this Mountain West Conference series.
