The Nevada Museum of Art features the exhibit “Voces y Visiones: Highlights from the Collection of El Museo del Barrio, New York” this April, as well as offering several special events.
The “Voces y Visiones” exhibit features more than 50 objects, including sculpture, painting, prints, photographs, and mixed media installations addressing themes such as identity politics, colonialism, emotional connections to homeland and contemporary visual culture. All works are from the stellar art collection of New York’s El Museo del Barrio, the leading Latino cultural institution in the United States dedicated to Latino, Latin American and Caribbean art. This exhibition was jointly organized by the El Museo del Barrio and the Nevada Museum of Art.

- TALK: AIGA Presents Aaron Draplin, at 6 p.m. April 5. Using scientific proof and state-of-the-art multimedia techniques, Aaron James Draplin of Draplin Design Co. delivers a design talk that includes a couple of tall tales from his so-called career in the cutthroat world of contemporary graphic design. Cost: $10 / $8 museum and AIGA members.
- ART BITE Rocío Aranda-Alvarado on “Voces y Visiones,” noon April 19. El Museo del Barrio Curator Rocío Aranda-Alvarado discusses the Latin American cultural and art historical contexts of highlights from “Voces y Visiones.” Cost: $10 / Free for museum members.
- TALK Garden Designer Shirley Watts on Natural Discourse, 6 p.m. April 19. Shirley Watts discusses the collaborative project between the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley and a multi-disciplinary group of artists, writers, architects and researchers. Cost: $10 / $8 museum members.

- First Thursday with the Fan Tools, 5 to 7 p.m. April 4. Grab a drink, groove to the live music and check out the galleries. The event is sponsored by Barrick Gold of North America and hosted by The X 100.1 FM Radio and Great Basin Brewing Company. The wine bar is sponsored by Whispering Vine Wine Company and bottled water is donated by Sam’s Club. Bring the kids for Kids Open Art Studio, available from 5 to 7 p.m. for $4 per child. First Thursday is free for museum members or non-members with paid regular admission.
- Art Afternoon: Workshop & Social for Seniors, 1 to 3 p.m. April 12. Expand your interests with a docent-guided tour and studio art class. Light refreshments will be available. No art background necessary. Cost for a session: $7 / $6 museum members. The event is sponsored in part by the Leonette Foundation.
- Hands/ON! on Second Saturday – Drawing Projects, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 13. Celebrate the Year of the Snake! The Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated in January or February depending on the lunar calendar. Ring in the New Year with hands-on art projects, performance and storytelling. Admission to hands/ON! is free.
- Sunday Music Brunch with Tony Savage Trio, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15. Enjoy brunch presented by Composition Café accompanied by live acoustical music. The menu features eggs Benedict, fresh fruit mimosas and an omelet station. Doors open at 10 am. An a la carte menu has prices from $3. Museum members receive a 10 percent savings. The event is presented in partnership with KUNR Radio, and is sponsored by the attorneys at Holland & Hart.
