‘Voces y Visiones’ exhibit opens March 2 at the Nevada Museum of Art; March programs scheduled

“Voces y Visiones: Highlights from the Collection of El Museo del Barrio, New York,” opens March 2 at the Nevada Museum of Art. The museum also has a slate of events scheduled throughout March.”Voces y Visiones” is comprised of a wide-ranging and diverse survey of the art collection from New York’s El Museo del Barrio, the leading Latino cultural institution in the United States dedicated to Latino, Latin American and Caribbean art. This lively exhibition presents more than 50 objects, including sculpture, painting, prints, photographs and mixed media installations addressing such themes as identity politics, colonialism, emotional connections to homeland and contemporary visual culture. Artworks created by living artists are contextualized with a concise selection of ancient Taino stone carvings.

The museum is at 160 W. Liberty St. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays. It is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and on national holidays. Admission is $10, $8 seniors age 60 and older, $1 children ages 1-12.

2013 Scholastic Art Awards

March 8 – 29. This exhibition celebrates the artistic achievements of Northern Nevada middle and high school students. See award-winning artwork on display at the Holland Project Gallery, 140 Vesta St., open from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

An opening reception runs from 6 to 8 p.m. March 8 at Holland Project Gallery.

The Scholastic Art Awards of 2013 Awards Ceremony runs from 6 to 7 p.m. March 14 at the Nevada Museum of Art.

ART BITE Meet the Artist: Frohawk Two Feathers

Noon March 15. Frohawk Two Feathers presents mixed media paintings filled with real and imagined colonial histories. Cost: $10, free for museum members. Funded in part by Nevada Humanities.

Art Night, 7 to 10 p.m. March 15. The all-ages night of live performances features Frohawk Two Feathers of SUPERDELUX, art projects, a hands-on printing workshop, an interactive photo station and more. Cost: $5. Presented in partnership with the Holland Project.

Black Rock Design Institute Presents: Marlon Blackwell

6 p.m. March 21. Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, is an internationally recognized architect who works outside the architectural mainstream. His work is based in design strategies that celebrate and draw upon vernaculars, seeking to cross conventional boundaries. Cost: $10, $8 museum members, $5 students with valid ID. AIA and APA Continuing Education Credits available. A networking and social hour with beer provided by Silver Peak Brewery begins at 5 p.m.

ART BITE Meet the Artist: Cecile Chong on ‘Voces y Visiones’

Noon March 29. Join Ecuador-born, New York-based artist Cecile Chong as she discusses the entanglement of culture, history, place and interpretation, and how we are more alike than different from one another. Cost: $10, free for museum members. Funded in part by Nevada Humanities.

The museum’s regularly scheduled events are as follows:

First Thursday with Buster Blue

5 to 7 p.m. March 7. Grab a drink, groove to the live music, and check out the galleries at this event sponsored by Barrick Gold of North America and hosted by The X 100.1-FM radio and Great Basin Brewing Company. The wine bar is sponsored by Whispering Vine Wine Company and bottled water is donated by Sam’s Club. Bring the kids for Kids Open Art Studio, available from 5 to 7 p.m. for $4 per child. First Thursday is free for museum members or non-members with paid regular admission.

Art Afternoon: workshop and social for seniors

1 to 3 p.m. March 8. Expand your interests with a docent-guided tour and studio art class. Light refreshments will be available. No art background is necessary. Cost for a session is $7, $6 museum members. Sponsored in part by the Leonette Foundation.

Hands/ON! On Second Saturday – Mardi Gras/Carnival: Mask Making and Maracas

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 9. Celebrate the Year of the Snake! The Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated in January or February, depending on the lunar calendar. Ring in the New Year with hands-on art projects, performance and storytelling. Admission to hands/ON! is free.

Sunday Music Brunch with Mac Esposito Band

11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 17. Enjoy brunch presented by Composition Café accompanied by live acoustic music. The menu features eggs Benedict, fresh fruit mimosas and an omelet station. Doors open at 10 a.m. An a la carte menu has items starting from $3. Museum members receive a 10 percent savings. Presented in partnership with KUNR radio.
