The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office hosted 16 volunteers, interns and externs in 2012, whose time totaled an extra 2,103 service hours for the department in 2012.

The volunteer representatives included law students, paralegal students, criminal justice undergraduates from the University of Reno, Nevada, local high school students and citizen volunteers. The legal externship is designed to give the paralegal student practical experience in their occupational field. Students receive no compensation, but do gain valuable work experience.

The staff members from the District Attorney’s office host educational experiences for volunteers and interns. The program offers participants a glimpse into the world of the District Attorney’s Office and in return they gain experience. Some activities that interns are involved in include shadowing the staff into court to learn the roles of prosecution, advocacy, investigative tasks and more.

Washoe County District Attorney Dick Gammick said the program provides excellent opportunities for his staff to do some mentoring and interact with potential upcoming community leaders.

“We get the chance to work with people and talk about what we do,” said Gammick. “Our Family Support Division is a busy place, as is our Fraud Check Program, Investigations, Administration, the Washoe County Child Abuse Response & Evaluations (CARES) and the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). Each of these programs has a unique role, and observing a day in the life of the DA’s Office is important. We are proud to have the participation of a volunteer workforce.”
