Ross, Gilbert, and Waters Medical Buildings to be Leveled

The Ross, Gilbert, and Waters Medical Buildings, located on the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Campus at 1001 N. Mountain Street, are scheduled to begin demolition on Monday, April 16, 2012. With a combined square footage of 54,402, the mechanical demolition will be performed by Facilities Management, Inc. (FMI) and should take approximately 45 days to complete.

“Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare (CTRH) would like to alert the community of this action and inform those within the vicinity that there will be no access to the site during and after the demolition,” said Jon Tyler, Marketing Specialist. “FMI will preserve the established trees while removing large segments of asphalt, curbing and landscape. Extensive dust control measures for the surrounding residents will be implemented. For safety reasons, the public is reminded to not converse with workers and remain well outside of the perimeter.”

Constructed in 1976, the buildings have served the community for over 30 years.  The property is zoned for medical services in accordance with the original land grant from Edith and Dick Waters.

All three buildings have met the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standards for environmental safety and have been tested for asbestos and lead. In accordance with Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare’s ongoing mission to preserve the environment, efforts were made to salvage anything possible from the property before demolition. These efforts included the disbursement of usable cabinetry, furniture, utility fixtures and landscaping features.

Additionally, the Carson City and Eastfork Fire Departments were able to use the abandoned buildings for training and drills, along with the Carson City Sherriff Department’s SWAT team. “I cannot express how useful this training has been to our department,” said John Arneson, Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief. “The rare type of training that these buildings provided gave our personnel the confidence to use drastic rescue and evacuation options if needed during a real, live fire event.”
