RENOWN NEWS RELEASE
Renown Children’s Hospital welcomes Victoria Castañeda, MD, a full-time pediatric hematologist/oncologist. Castañeda is providing 24/7 physician coverage locally for children, their families and referring physicians.
“Renown Children’s Hospital is pleased to announce this expanded physician coverage, which means families can receive quality healthcare here at home,” said David Veillette, executive vice president of specialty hospitals at Renown Health. “Previously, there had been visiting physician coverage in the community just three days a week. Having Dr. Castañeda provide full-time coverage right here in Reno seven days a week is a tremendous resource for families in our community.”
Castañeda is board certified in pediatric hematology/oncology. She completed an internship and pediatric residency at Driscoll Foundation Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, an affiliate of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. Dr. Castañeda began her fellowship in hematology/oncology in 1987 at State University of New York and concluded her fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where she received additional training in hematopathology, a branch of pathology which studies diseases of cells originating from the bone marrow.
She practiced pediatric hematology and oncology at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville from 1993 to 2011. Most recently, Castañeda practiced those two specialties at Helen Keller Memorial Hospital in Sheffield, Ala.
Castañeda speaks fluent Spanish and Tagalog (Philippines). She said she is very excited to be practicing in northern Nevada and to be closer to family in the region. In her free time, Castañeda enjoys gardening, arts and crafts and fishing.
Renown Children’s Hospital is the continuing leader in children’s healthcare. Among its offerings are Children’s Specialty Care and the Children’s Infusion Center.
