WASHOE COUNTY NEWS RELEASE

During a joint meeting today the Washoe County Commission, acting as the Board of Fire Commissioners for both Truckee Meadows and Sierra Fire Protection Districts, discussed with the Reno City Council various options relating to regionalization of fire services.

The commissioners presented options to the city of Reno to continue the development of a joint powers authority for regional fire services that would include:

  • Financial sustainability
  • Flexible staffing
  • Use of volunteer firefighters
  • Continuation of automatic aid that would stay in place until the JPA is formed

The city of Reno countered with an offer to keep the existing interlocal agreement in place for an additional 6 months, which was rejected by the Board of Fire Commissioners due to the fact that the current agreement is financially unsustainable.

Chairman Bob Larkin said, “In the best interest of continuing to provide financially sustainable fire services to the residents of the fire districts, the Truckee Meadows and Sierra Fire Protection Districts will continue preparations to transition to a fully functional fire service on July 1, 2012.”
