The historic day’s celebrations kick off at 9:30 a.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds facility at 2680 E. Ninth Street in Reno with an inspirational speech by Dr. Andrew Harewood, a decorated major in the United States Army. The day continues with a program that highlights projects created by Club members and staff at 2 p.m. followed by a brief Internet safety program presented in partnership with the Children’s Cabinet and Netsmartz at 5 p.m. Nevada Governor and First Lady Sandoval are expected to attend the event.

“Every year the Club takes great pride in celebrating the contributions of Dr. King and using the three-day holiday as an opportunity to teach the next generation about his legacy,” said Mike Wurm, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “This year, we welcome Dr. Harewood, and look forward to his participation in our day of celebration.”

In preparation for the day, Club coordinators have been working with youth and staff to develop projects that highlight the achievements of Dr. King, the civil rights movement and great moments in African American History. The projects will be displayed in the Club for the public to view. Dr. Harewood’s 9:30 a.m. speech comes in advance of an event at the Peppermill Reno, where he will present a keynote for the Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society’s 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner Celebration.

All Martin Luther King Day activities are held in conjunction with regular Boys & Girls Club programming and families are encouraged to join in the festivities and educational opportunities.
