I’ve been lucky enough over the past few months to work with some great folks at KNPB on an uplifting and inspiring documentary that includes Reno’s Solace Tree, a local non-profit that helps families grieve the loss of a loved one. The show is called “You’ll Always Be With Me,” and it premiers Sunday, May 9th at 6:30 pm on KNPB, the local PBS channel. It’s also slated to air nationally on other PBS stations.
You’ll meet some incredible people, like the mom with two small children whose husband left for work and was killed in a workplace accident that day. She told us she’s just taking things one day at a time. She finds support at Solace Tree. So do her children.
Producer Pamela McDonough worked at CBS News in New York before coming to Northern Nevada. This is her second project with KNPB. “I learned from this project that the best thing you can do to help someone who is dealing with a loss is listen… without judging or advising,” said McDonough. She spent hours sitting in on groups at Solace Tree, watching the process unfold.
Solace Tree offers groups for all ages, young kids, teens and adults, and gives them a place where they can open up about their successes and their set-backs. Kids have an especially tough time with loss, because often their friends at school don’t understand what they’re going through. The crew at KNPB captured some inspiring and compelling stories. Tune in if you can. I think you’ll be glad you did.
