Explosion at UNR Damages Two Dorms

An explosion believed to be caused by a mechanical failure at the University of Nevada, Reno resulted in damage Friday to two student dormitories.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. July 5 at Argenta and Nye halls.

Eight people were treated by REMSA for minor injuries, according to UNR.

The buildings were being checked floor by floor by fire and emergency crews for structural damage and for any remaining occupants. Nobody was missing and law enforcement is not looking for suspects.

The first small explosion was witnessed by people on scene and was followed by a second larger explosion, a statement from UNR said.

North Virginia and North Sierra streets were closed to traffic, which was rerouted to Evans Avenue.
