The first day of school is less than a week away and the Washoe County School District is urging parents who haven’t already registered their children to do so immediately.

Registration has been open since January and getting an accurate number of students is important so the proper number of teachers are in place. The first day of school is Aug. 6.

Screenings and meet-and-greet sessions for kindergarteners and their teachers are scheduled Aug. 6-10 at most schools. Parents must sign up for a 30-minute time slot in advance. During screenings, teachers evaluate children’s abilities to identify letters and numbers, assess their fine and gross motor skills, and get to know the child.

The school year for kindergartners officially starts Aug. 13 with a few exceptions, such as those on “green track” attending Double Diamond, Alice Smith, and Spanish Springs elementary schools. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 may be signed up for kindergarten.

Getting ready to attend kindergarten is an important part of assuring that our young students begin their academic careers in a positive way.”

After going through the registration process online, parents must visit their child’s school with an original birth certificate, immunization records and a utility bill that shows proof of residency for the zoned school. Schools will work with families who are struggling to provide proper documentation.

Students who are already enrolled in the district must be re-registered annually via the Infinite Campus portal. Parents are asked to review and update their children’s medical particulars, emergency contact information, and other pertinent details. Those without internet access can visit schools in person.

Students at schools in Incline Village are scheduled to start Aug. 20. Kindergartners there start Aug. 27.
