This week we do something different for the Reno Arts Fix. With the end of the year and the holidays, the art scene slows down for just a moment.
Shoe Tree on Highway 395
I had heard about Shoe Trees in the past, and driven by them but never really stopped. Places that have a tree that people leave their old shoes for good luck. This one is on Highway 395 just about 30 miles north of Reno and has quite a following in northern Nevada. This is a pleasant drive and a great family outing as well.
A shoe tree may not sound like much, but this tree has been written up in many blogs, has a Yelp page, and even a Facebook page. The short time I was there I saw many families as well as couples visit the tree and leave their offerings.
The day after Christmas seemed to be quite busy, as I found out later it is a tradition with many families to take the old shoes that have been replaced by Christmas presents and write their wishes on them taking them to a shoe tree and leaving them. Watching the children with glee throwing the shoes up in the air and missing and them coming down on their head was quite entertaining and seeing their joy when the shoes stuck and they succeeded in the task.
I made a short video of what I saw and here are some links so that you may find this attraction yourself.
