Three schools in the Washoe County School District will be closed Friday due to the ongoing Davis Fire, while all other schools in the district will be open.

The district announced Thursday afternoon that Galena High School, Marce Herz Middle School and Hunsberger Elementary School will be canceled on Sept. 13 based on Thursday evening Davis Fire evacuation zones and updated information from public safety officials.

“The district continues to collaborate with public safety officials to monitor the Davis Fire and determine the safest plan for our students and staff members,” school officials said in a statement to families.

The decision to close these three schools comes as local authorities work to contain the Davis Fire, which has been burning in the area. As of Thursday evening, the fire was nearly 60% contained. A severe threat anticipated on Wednesday did not pan out as expected. Firefighting efforts, calmer winds, and cooler temperatures are reducing the fire’s size.

The fire’s proximity to the three schools prompted the closures. The University of Nevada’s Redfield campus is also closed.
