Some closures continue in wake of Davis Fire

Washoe County School District officials said just 10 schools will be closed Thursday, Sept. 12, as firefighters and emergency personnel continue monitoring the Davis Fire. The fire, which started Saturday afternoon near the Davis Creek Regional Park in Washoe Valley, has reached 37% containment and burned 5,824 acres. 

Schools closed for Thursday are:

  • Galena High School
  • Marce Herz Middle School
  • Picollo School
  • Huffaker Elementary School
  • Hunsberger Elementary School
  • Lenz Elementary School
  • Pleasant Valley Elementary School
  • Incline High School
  • Incline Middle School
  • Incline Elementary School.

In-person classes at the Redfield Campus of the University of Nevada, Reno have also been canceled for Thursday and non-essential operations at the site are suspended. All other WCSD and UNR locations are open. 

The U.S. Forest Service Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest has closed all recreation sites within the area from Hunter Creek Trail south to Franktown Road. The closure includes the Thomas Creek, Jones/Whites, and Ophir Creek trailheads, Mt. Rose welcome plaza and campground and Galena Creek Regional Park and Visitor Center. Portions of the Tahoe Rim Trail near Tahoe Meadows as well as the Mt. Rose Wilderness are included in the closure. The closure will remain in effect until Sept. 25 unless otherwise lifted.
