Reno events to check out this week (8/19/24): Sparks lantern fest, art and music

The Reno area is hosting a variety of events this week, ranging from music programs to art parties and food tastings. The Reno Phil’s discover music program brings symphonic music to local schools and libraries, while The Potentialist Workshop offers a sober sunset art and tea party. The Sparks Lantern festival also returns this week, promising to be a visual treat.

Discover Music is an educational outreach program where Reno Phil musicians travel to Nevada schools and libraries to perform assemblies tailored to the ages and specifications of each audience. These are designed to give students and families a close-up look at symphonic music through performances, demos and participatory activities. Thursday at The North Valleys Library.
  2. Sober Sunset Art & Tea Party. The Potentialist Workshop is hosting a sunset tea party in Upside Down Land. This is an opportunity to live out childhood dreams of a tea party, work on our art projects and hang out with friends without the pressure to drink. There will be complimentary hot water, tea and treats. Please bring your own cup, blankets and art projects to watch the sunset.Thursday at The Potentialist Workshop.
  3. Sierra Mountain Food Tasting. Enjoy foods from local eateries in Northern Nevada. Purchase a ticket, become an AGC member and get five additional tastings. Friday at the Elks Lodge Reno. 
  4. Reno Night Market: J Resort’s Glow Plaza. More than 35 local makers will be showcasing their creations at a pop-up market with handmade creations in every style. The market is not just for adults. Get creative with face painting, free crafts and flop around in a bounce house. Friday at the Glow Plaza.
  5. Water Lantern Festival in Sparks. The event is bringing people together for a celebration of light and community. The evening will be filled with food trucks, music activities and thousands of lanterns lighting the night. Saturday at the Sparks Marina.
