Editor’s picks

  1. Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. The Institute was born of a desire to develop young opera singers and to address the lack of dramatic voices in the opera world, in particular for the great roles of Verdi and Wagner. This three-week intensive program is generously hosted by University of Nevada Reno for singers with large or unusual voices aged 15-36 at varying levels of development. Tuesday at the UNR Quad.
  2. Live at Reno Public Market: Purusa and JJ Braves. J Braves is a rock artist from Los Angeles on a mission to rattle the foundations of venues coast to coast with his bombastic sound. Influenced by 80’s radio hits blended with alternative rock from the 90’s and 2000’s, JJ Braves delivers massive electric guitar sounds, gigantic synths, and soaring vocals. Wednesday at Reno Public Market.
  3. Artown Closing Night: Y La Bamba. To declare one thematic narrative from Lucha, Y La Bamba’s seventh album, would be to chisel away a story within a story within a story into the illusion of something singular. “Lucha is a symbol of how hard it is for me to tackle healing, live life, and be present,” Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, lead vocalist and producer of Y La Bamba, says of the title behind the album which translates from Spanish to English as ‘fight’ and is also a nickname for Luz, which means light. Wednesday at Wingfield Park.
  4. RuPaul’s Drag Race Willam and Dragula’s Fantasia Royale Gaga. Join Travel Daddyz in welcoming the star of RuPaul’s Drag Race and multifaceted celebrity WILLAM to Santa Rosa, CA! Who isn’t familiar with this STAR? If you haven’t caught her on TV as the unforgettable and only disqualified queen on Drag Race, an actress on Nip Tuck, a guest judge on Dragula, or on Celebrity Family Feud, then perhaps you’ve seen her on the silver screen in American Pie, Hurricane Bianca, A Star is Born, or Trixie Mattel: Moving Parts. Friday at Theater
  5. Flicks on the Bricks. Presented in collaboration with the City of Reno and Sierra Tap House, “Flicks on the Bricks” is a one-of-a-kind, free community event set in the scenic Reno Riverwalk District in the picturesque Wingfield Park. This event offers the unique experience of enjoying family-favorite movies in the park courtesy of the Cordillera International Film Festival while relishing in the delectable offerings from the local food trucks as well as craft beers, mocktails, and cocktails located at the adjacent Sierra Tap House Beer Garden. Friday at Wingfield Park.
