Northern Nevada Public Health officials issued a stage 1 emergency episode for Wednesday, July 31, due to smoke from the Park Fire in Northern California.

The air quality index for the Reno-Sparks area on Wednesday is forecasted to reach “unhealthy for sensitive groups” to “unhealthy” levels at times.

Smoke from the fire is expected to impact the Reno-Sparks area starting Tuesday night and persisting through Thursday morning. The smoke is likely to settle in valleys overnight.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves. Everyone, especially sensitive groups such as children, seniors and those with heart or lung diseases, should consider reducing outdoor activities and staying indoors. NNPH also suggests creating a clean air room within homes to provide a safe space with filtered air. Windows and doors should remain closed during poor air quality.

The Park Fire, the source of the smoke, continues to burn in Northern California. It is the fifth-largest fire in California’s history and has burned more than 383,000 acres.
