A website launched Tuesday provides the community with a real-time look at the city’s carbon emissions, energy use and utility information. The dashboard is intended to help the city reach its climate change goals by using real-time data tracked 24 hours a day.
The plan to launch the real-time tracking was announced in July as a partnership between the City of Reno, the state and local startup Ledger8760. City officials said since the launch they’ve already been able to identify usage patterns that aren’t helping the city to reduce its carbon emissions.
In 2008, the city and state set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2025. City officials say they’re on track to reach that goal.
Data for the online portal is collected from throughout the community, including 50 city-owned buildings, 9,000 streetlights, 10 renewable generation installations, the city’s fleet of vehicles and publicly reported emissions data.
