The City of Reno and the Chabad of Northern Nevada hosted the annual Grand Chanukah Menorah Lighting ceremony Sunday night at City Plaza. The event marked the first day of Chanukah and was open to the public this year after being restricted to press and officials last year due to COVID-19.
About 100 people came to celebrate the lighting, which was hosted by Rabbi Mendel Cunin. Local and state government officials and several prominent members of the city’s local Jewish community were also on hand.
Reno City Council member Naomi Duerr shared a traditional story with the crowd and kicked off the ceremony. Madeline Burak from Governor Steve Sisolak’s office also spoke.
Rabbi Cunin shared the story of Joseph’s Dream from the Tora, offering words of hope and togetherness for Reno’s rapidly growing community.
