Update: Scott Kelley has resigned but will still be on the ballot for Nov 3.

Great article. We really would be better off if our trustees were appointed in my opinion. Also, I’d love to know the name of the judge who denied the TPO. Washoe Co family court is notorious for denying women that in our community and one day it’s going to come back and haunt them. That court doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to women anyway (remember Weller’s comments.)

Yes, divorce can be ugly, but this story is about much more than a divorce. What kind of public figure threatens a journalist with legal action for asking questions, especially after having agreed to answer questions and then not responding? And what kind of public figure fabricates social media accounts, especially one that includes the name of his opponent for his position? This is extremely disturbing behavior. For the record, I do know Jeff Church and support his efforts to shine a light on fiscal irresponsibility, both at WCSD and in the City of Reno.

I voted for Jeff Church, so Mr. Kelley was not my preference for School Board, anyway. However, having gone through a divorce myself, I can empathize with his situation. The fault for causing couples to resort to all of this subterfuge and open warfare, lies with our divorce laws and our courts. The laws often seem to be fair, but the actual interpretation of those laws in courts encourages couples to spew as much filth about one another as possible. When I was a volunteer for Texas Fathers for Equal Rights (back in the 1990s) I learned that Texas Courts typically awarded the wife custody of children, even if the wife was a confirmed drug abuser. The 1% exception was when a woman was a convicted drug dealer; only then was a ruling against the woman common. Our divorce process makes both parties act and say things that are, without doubt, a form of temporary insanity.

This needn’t be the case. All states need comprehensive reforms of “family law” statutes to include that joint custody is a rebuttable presumption and that an annual accounting of child support must be made to show that child support that is paid, actually goes to supporting the children. Only Missouri has a law requiring an accounting for child support usage, but they rarely enforce it. If the children are moved from the domicile that existed during the marriage, the parent with custody must pay for the transportation of the children back to the non-custodial parent. This latter change will discourage the current practice of the woman hiding the children from the father (often by moving thousands of miles away). This was what Nicole Simpson was doing with OJ’s kids and was likely the proximate cause of her being murdered. The key point for our citizens and our elected representatives is that we must reform our divoce process so that when there is an unfortunate end of a marriage, that it be as amicable as humanly possible.

Mr. Kelley needn’t resign over the allegations in a divorce document. Allegations during a divorce are often inflated or wildly falsified. I wasn’t planning to vote for Mr. Kelley, but I wish that he and his wife will step back from their (temporary) hatred for one another and keep the welfare of their children paramount as the two parents work through this process.

I could care less about his marital fight but the behavior he exhibited in those fake social media accounts are appalling. He should consider stepping down now and drop out of the re-election race. I’m really disturbed by the homophobic statements.

Nicol Herris August 26, 2020 - 8:35 am

This is very disturbing and distressing. Mr. Kelley’s behavior and conduct is not becoming of an elected official. Maybe he should put his political career on hold while he takes care of his family.

Michael Roehr August 25, 2020 - 10:21 pm

Daaaaaaang nice piece by you guys. When are folks gonna learn that your fake fronts will eventually crumble? Everyone has flaws, we are human. But to make fake accounts to bolster your viewpoint while acting like a bozo to family and teachers?

Bzzzzt time to go Scotty-boy.
