More than 100 life-saving organs transplanted

Donor Network West, the federally designated organ procurement organization for Northern California and Northern Nevada, announced it has recorded 43 organ donors in July 2020, the highest monthly donor record in its history. From the 43 organ donors, 127 organs were recovered and transplanted.

There are approximately 10,000 men, women, and children waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in Northern California and Northern Nevada. Each organ donor can save up to eight lives and heal as many as 75 people through tissue donation.

“To those individuals waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, every organ donor offers a possible second chance at life,” said Janice F. Whaley, CEO of Donor Network West. “During these unprecedented times, COVID-19 has significantly reduced the number of viable organ donors. To have a record-breaking month of organ donors during a pandemic validates the work we do to increase awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation and should give hope to those on the organ transplant waiting list.”

Donor Network West serves 175 hospitals and more than 13 million people within 120,000 square miles. The non-profit organization works in partnership with families, doctors, nurses, more than 500 funeral homes, and 44 coroners and medical examiners to connect donors to recipients. To learn more about organ and tissue donation, or to register as a donor, visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or DonorNetworkWest.org.
