The Nevada System of Higher Education and its Board of Regents are considering extending University of Nevada President Marc Johnson’s contract through December of 2020 — or until a replacement has been named.

The decision will be made at a special regents meeting April 10.

The search for a new chancellor will also be discussed at that meeting, with that search process slated to begin in June.

The UNR president search process will include campus visits in September and interviews with finalists September 16. The regents are scheduled to meet September 17 at which time they will decide who UNR’s next leader will be.

“The September dates were chosen with the expectation that students, faculty, staff, and other key constituencies will be back on campus and able to meet with the finalists in person,” UNR personnel announced in an email.

The search firm WittKieffer is conducting the UNR search and is accepting applications through August 3.

Former Governor Brian Sandoval and Nevada Supreme Court Judge James Hardesty have both expressed interest in applying.
