8 things to do this week – fine edition

We’re into our fourth week of finding things to do that don’t involve leaving home. It’s fine. We’re fine. Everything’s fine.

  1. Volunteer for a Pop-Up Packing Session with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. They’ll be at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center Monday – Thursday with shifts form 9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. packing up food for thousands of local families in need.   2. Have we mentioned the May Museum 2 Minute Tours? Assistant Curator Samantha Szesciorka is conducting virtual tours of the museum, including of Wilbur’s bedroom, where he’d likely be watching Netflix if he was on lockdown with the rest of us.   3. Make a potion. Potter fans have built a massive online network at Hogwarts Is Here allowing you to login, choose your house, and enroll in classes including Charms, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration. You won’t find a cure for COVID-19, but you might find a cure for boredom. http://www.hogwartsishere.com/courses/
  4. Marie Kondo your digital life. Yeah, we think you CAN go zero inbox. It’s time to unsubscribe, bulk delete, or create some folders to organize that mass of digital stress. While you’re at it, consider organizing the apps on your phone, cleaning up your friends list, and deleting all those bad photos on your camera roll. It’s much easier to show off your daily quarantine bakes if they’re all in one organized album.
  5. Cherish the slowdown. We know life is a bit scary and there’s a great deal of uncertainty right now. But in a few months you may not want to look back and wonder what you did with all that down time. Consider adopting a daily gratitude practice. Set your anxieties aside and focus on finding gratitudes in your life: your friends and family, your resourcefulness, your health, the feeling of crisp winter air on your cheeks. We’ll start: we’re grateful for you, our readers.
  6. Take in a play or an opera. The National Theatre in London is streaming free recordings of live productions for one week each. This week it’s the comedy “One Man, Two Guvnors” starring James Corden. Future weeks feature “Jane Eyre,” “Treasure Island,” and Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/nt-at-home.   7. Launch a virtual book club. Sometimes it’s easier to read a book knowing you’ll have someone to talk about it with later. Pick a “place” like Zoom, Skype, Facetime, or Google Hangouts, invite your friends, pick a book, and set the date. Too busy working from home and wrangling kids? Consider going shorter with an article club instead.
  8. Choreograph your own music video. How hard could it be?
