Washoe library system rolls out new digital cards that can be obtained from home

Date:

Washoe County residents who don’t already have library cards are now able to access digital collections and online resources by obtaining a digital library card, the county’s library system announced this week.

Access is free and will allow first-time users to access library materials from home.

Digital collections include e-books for people of all ages, magazines, audiobooks, school math resources, along with other online resources and databases. Virtual reference assistance remains available, too.

Branches have been temporarily closed since March 15 to halt the spread of COVID-19.

“We are proud to introduce this new instant digital card so that Washoe County residents can take advantage of the library’s digital collection while our branches are closed,” library director Jeff Scott said in a statement. “This new library card works as soon as someone registers and it will remain active until the libraries reopen.”

Once library branches resume operations, anyone who signed up for a digital card may be able to convert it to a permanent library account, Scott said.

The library system is also looking at ways to launch a virtual “story time,” and is currently offering activities for families on social media and through its email newsletter.
